List of the ingredients in my expensive Vet food
I pay around $25.00 for a case of canned dog food from my vet.
I'm going to list exactly what's in the can of food from the largest percentage of ingredients to the least.
- Water
- Egg product (what's an egg product?)
- Turkey
- Rice
- Ground whole grain corn (I wouldn't use corn. It's used as a filler)
- Pork liver (along with all the hormones concentrated in the liver?)
- Soy fiber
- Dicalcium Phosphate (Mineral Calcium phosphate)
- Potassium Chloride (use regular potassium. This type is used to make fertilizer and given to cattle, therefore cheap)
- iodized salt
- Calcium carbonate (inexpensive dietary calcium supplement or antacid)
- Choline Cholride (Choline chloride is mass produced and is an important additive in feed especially for chicken where it accelerates growth)
Vitamin e Ferrous Sulfate (Ferrous sulfate is used to treat iron-deficiency anemia. Side effects of therapy may include nausea and epigastric abdominal discomfort after taking iron) Zinc oxide,(Zinc oxide is added to many breakfast cereals, as a source of zinc; a necessary nutrient. (Other cereals may contain zinc sulfate, for the same purpose.) Some prepackaged foods also include trace amount)
- Taurine (taurine is used as a functional food in many energy drinks and energy products)
- Thiamine Mononitrate vitamin B1
- Copper sulfate (Copper sulfate pentahydrate is a fungicide)
- Manganous Oxide
- Niacin
- Calcium Pantothenate (vitamin b5)
- Vitamin b12
- Pyridoxine Hydrochoride (Vitamin b6)
- Biotin
- Riboflavin
- Calcium iodate (is a compound of calcium and iodate anion. It is used as a dough conditioner)
- Vitamin D3 supplement
- Sodium Selenite (This salt is a source of selenium in many food supplements)
- Folic Acid
Things your dog food should NOT contain:
- Chemical Preservatives - BHA, BHT, Ethoxyquin
- Corn - known allergen, poor source of protein, highly indigestible
- Wheat - same as above
- Soy - same as above
- By-Products - indigestible beaks, feathers, feet, heads, etc. Does not have to contain meat
- Animal Fat (non-specific) or Beef Tallow - hard, indigestible fat source
- Flour - of any kind, used as a filler
- Pentobarbital - from tainted meat sources. Same chemical used in euthanizing animals
Once you are armed with this knowledge you can easily avoid the types of pretty packaging or a cute dog being served his "gourmet" dinners on dog china on TV. You know the one I'm talking about. It's a little white dog, maybe a terrier that walks to the bed and looks as cute as can be, wakes up his master and then master feeds this dog the gourmet food and life is good and everyone lives happily ever after. When has this ever been the case?
These advertisements make me sick. They spend millions on TV advertisements and forget about putting good dog food on the shelves. If they would only spend that money of quality food products then we would not have so many allergies in our pets today.
The dog food money goes right into the pockets of the top executives so do your dog and yourself a favor and either find the best food, because now you know what should not be in dog food or make your own from the recipes you find on this site.
Remember, dogs don't care what color, shape or consistency their food it as long as it smells good. Every watch your dog take a good sniff at any food before he eats it?
Most of the time, after a dog has approved of the smell of a food, he will eat it. They can actually "taste" the food by smelling it. Pretty neat, huh?
Dogs actually see odors. I could never visualize it before until I talked to a doctor. He was asking me if I had had any headaches lately. And I told him the weirdest thing that happened to me. I knew I was having a headache but instead of feeling the pain I was seeing it as visual lines across my vision. He told me I was having a aural migraine. So now I can understand that dogs can see smells because I saw pain. So it's very possible.
